MHP Needs Analysis

In 2008 MHA undertook a needs analysis of 145 organisations in NSW to better understand workforce capacity to promote mental health.

The survey identified clear gaps in the understanding of mental health promotion principles, with few respondents considering that mental health promotion is multi-sectored. Lack of key financial resources is a key limiting factor for organisations in undertaking mental health promotion activities. Human resources are another critical factor, being a major source of support when sufficient, but a large obstacle when adequate resources are not available.

Having further access to material resources and training, increased internal support and increased external support, particularly from a centralised coordinating body, would enhance the capacity of these organisations to promote mental health.

The report made a number of recommendations for increasing capacity to promote mental health in NSW.
