MHA undertook a research project in 2004 to determine if a state-wide mental health promotion (MHP) campaign in NSW could be an effective and efficient strategy towards improving mental health and wellbeing, and if so what the ideal mental health promotion campaign could look like.
Based on the evidence found in this study, it was recommended that a mental health promotion campaign should have two components – a community development approach to socially disadvantaged communities and a social marketing component to support local initiatives. There was little evidence of the effectiveness of social marketing campaigns alone.
