Seasons for Growth: Loss, Change & Grief Program

The Mental Health Association NSW Inc, in partnership with Good Grief Ltd., had implemented a community development pilot project for adult mental health consumers, who had insight into their mental health and recovery.

The peer education program was helpful in developing resilience, knowledge, skills and strategies to understand and help manage emotional responses to change and grief that can occur following life experiences such as loss of career and employment pathways, studies, relationships and life dreams. People living with mental health problems often experience a number of these and the impact may lead to depression, anxiety and/or relapse of their primary illness.

MHA is pleased to announce that following positive evaluation outcomes, Seasons for Growth (SFG) will be run again within the broader community.

Seasons for Growth workshops are being held across the Sydney metropolitan area for culturally and linguistically diverse communities until June 2010. The workshops are being offered free-of-charge and require a commitment of 3 hours per week, over a 5 week period.

The program is ideally suited for consumers who are managing their symptoms, sustaining their mental health and who seek understanding of the natural change processes that are experienced as loss and grief. The SFG program follows the natural changing process of the four seasons to describe the journey from identifying and naming the experience(s) to developing skills to cope and accept the changes and how to move on. The peer aspect of the program promotes the value of the life experience and the sharing of recovery journeys.
