Anxiety Awareness Seminars
Small Steps aims to improve the awareness and recognition of anxiety disorders in children by offering free seminars targeting primary school staff (teachers, principals, administrative staff) and parents. Duration is from 1 hour to 1.5 hours at your school. This could be before school, immediately after school, or in the evening. There is no cost incurred by you - Small Steps seminars are a community service, funded by NSW Health.
Teachers Seminars
The seminars for teachers are usually held during staff meetings or professional development days. The topic covers signs and symptoms of anxiety, telling normal fears from problem anxiety, the different disorders, how to speak to anxious child, referral and treatment options and how to work with anxious parents. An additional one hour strategies seminar is offered as a follow up to the seminar with a focus on building resilience, and managing specific supportive strategies associated with the disorders.
Parent Seminars
Parent Seminars are available at schools. They are best held after drop off, before pickup or in evenings. The seminars cover signs and symptoms, bust myths surrounding mental health, illustrate the difference between normal and problem anxiety, cover treatment options and have a special focus on strategies that can be used at home. Parents who would like to learn more about child anxiety management at home may also wish to attend the 4 week Parents of Anxious Children Program.
